In Memoriam: Eleanor “Ellie” Lazare

ELMSFORD, N.Y. (September 21, 2020) – Eleanor “Ellie” Lazare passed away peacefully at age 99 on September 12 at her home in Scarsdale, N.Y.

Throughout the years, Eleanor and her husband, Oliver, of 76 years devoted much of their lives to supporting and growing golf in the Met Area. Oliver passed away months earlier in December of 2019 at age 98. The Lazars were longtime members of Metropolis Country Club, where Ellie was first introduced to the game in 1935.

Ellie began her service in golf with the WMGA in the late 1960s. She was the chair of the Tournament Committee and President in 1977. She also served as President of the Women’s Tri-County Golf Association.

Ellie and Oliver made their greatest impact with the WGA Caddie Scholarship Fund. They both served on the board of directors and took great joy in seeing young men and women pursue their goals in education. As active Metropolis members, they were responsible for growing the club’s participation in the program. Through Ellie’s work, a ‘MCC Women’s Golf Day’ was created that, to this day, annually contributes a significant gift to the program.

At Metropolis, Ellie was a two-time Club champion (1965 and 1984) and became the first woman to serve on the club’s Board and Admissions Committee. In 2000, the Lazars received the MGA’s highest honor, the Distinguished Service Award, as recognition of these many contributions to the game.

The family has indicated that donations in her honor can be made to the Westchester Golf Association Caddie Scholarship Fund, 49 Knollwood Road, Elmsford, NY, 10523.
